Rugadh Tom Mac Intyre i gContae an Cábháin sa bhliain 1931. Scríobhann Tom i mBéarla agus i nGaeilge. Sular thosaigh sé ag scríobh go lánaimseartha i 1965 bhí sé ag múineadh i gClongowes Wood College, in Ollscoil Michigan agus Williams College. Bhain sé céim mháistreachta amach ón gColáiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath. Tá drámaí, filíocht, gearrscéalta agus úrscéalta scríofa aige. Toghadh ina bhall d’Aosdána é sa bhliain 1991. Ó na 1970idí i leith tá a chuid drámaí á léiriú i mBaile Átha Cliath, Londain agus Páras, mar shampla Doobally Black Way (1979). Bhuaigh a dhráma, Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire, Duais Stewart Parker i 1999. Bhuaigh sé an Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Best New Play Award le The Gallant John Joe (Skehana Productions) i mí an Mhárta 2002. Is é Only an Apple (New Island Books, 2009) an dráma is déanaí aige a léiríodh in Amharclann na Mainistreach i 2009.
