A detailed academic analysis of the development of the construct of the Gaeltacht by early generations of language revivalists. The author draws on a broad range of sources in this book in tracing the creation and development of the Gaeltacht as a distinctive entity. Both creative and discursive works of the early years of the language revival are explored here, in addition to theoretical issues, which informed the ideological basis for identifying the Gaeltacht as a distinctive region in the early years of the last century.
A pioneering work in the contemporary debate of the future of the Gaeltacht.
